"My 11 year old is super picky, it's really hard to find activities/camps she really enjoys and she LOVED the Summer Camp at Western. The staff is not just super knowledgeable and caring but they are masters at tailoring activities & times according to the group's needs & preferences. I wish every kid on the Island could experience at least one of WEA's camps."

    Day Camp Optional Overnight Add-On

The optional overnight “sleepaway” for our day summer camps runs on Wednesday evening during most weeks of camp. Youth sleep outside under tarps or in rustic cabins and cook their meals over the fire. This is a great opportunity for day campers to try out an overnight and see if its something they like. Maybe they will be interested in one of our multi-day adventures next year! A packing list will be made available after registration.

**Please note that this option is only run certain weeks and may be cancelled week of due to enrollment and other logistical factors. You are also welcome to sign up week of.**

What To Bring On A Summer Day Camp

Backpack (with hip straps recommended), at least 2 1L water bottles, lunch, extra snacks, waterproof sunscreen, hand sanitizer, wide brimmed sun hat, long sleeve sun shirt (summer only), rain jacket, fleece or wool sweater, t-shirt, shorts, long pants, running shoes or hiking boots, swimsuit, towel, PFD/life jacket that fits (required as per our swim policy for Thetis only), black garbage bag (hike day only) and a change of clothes. We helped cook and set up shelter. Landon was very funny and nice. He made me feel welcome. It was super duper fun."

    Our Summer Camps Encourage Safety

    General Safety

Western Educational Adventures takes safety seriously. Not only do we want our participants to have an exceptional time, but just as importantly, we want them to return home safe and sound. Western Educational Adventures staff are certified in high level first aid and have years of experience managing risk in the outdoors. You won’t find a more qualified kids summer camp staff team anywhere else!

    Swimming Safety

As we swim in wilderness locations, we require all youth under the age of 9 to wear a lifejacket while swimming. Children over the age of 9 must have a swimming ability of level 5 or higher. We want to keep your kids safe and having fun!

"Our Daughter spent two weeks last Summer at Camp Barnard. She really enjoyed herself learning how to paddle in a canoe, make a campfire, and build a shelter. Landon is a great leader and his company makes it easy for kids to get out into the wilderness in a safe and inclusive environment."

    -Stefano Mosi

    Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Wild Paws Day Camp run?

The Wild Paws Day Camp program operates as three separate camps across Greater Victoria: Sooke – Fred Milne Park, Westshore (Langford) – West Hills, and Saanich – Beaver Lake.

Each location runs its own program with the same engaging curriculum, safety standards, and leadership. Campers register for and attend only the site they choose — there is no travel between locations.

For site-specific details, including maps and times, please see the Pick-Up & Drop-Off Times & Locations section.

What are the ages for the Wild Paws Day Camp?

Wild Paws Day Camp is designed for children ages 6–10. We may consider 11–12 year-olds upon special request. Groups are generally mixed-age, but we actively balance cohorts so that no age range is heavily outnumbered — ensuring safe, engaging, and age-appropriate programming for all.

It’s important to note that when registering, families select the appropriate age category (for example, 6–8 or 9–10). We carefully manage the number of campers per category to maintain balanced group sizes, but we do not control the exact ages within each category. This approach allows for a natural mix of ages and social experiences while keeping staff-to-camper ratios safe and consistent.

    Where do the camps run?

Wild Paws Day Camp operates as three distinct camps in the Greater Victoria area:

    • Sooke
    • Westshore - Thetis Lake
    • Saanich – Beaver Lake

Each location has its own staff team, schedule, and meeting point. Full details including times, maps, and parking instructions are listed in the Pick-Up & Drop-Off Times & Locations section.

What time does camp start and end each day?

Regular camp hours are 8 AM – 5 PM at all Wild Paws locations. Please plan to arrive on time for both drop-off and pick-up. Extended-day supervision may be available for an additional fee — see the Dates & Rates section for current options.

Can I pick up my child early or drop them off late?

Typically, this is not possible due to travel times and the needs of the full group. Our programs often move between multiple outdoor sites, so mid-day arrivals or early departures are difficult to coordinate safely.

That said, special arrangements may be possible if requested in advance. Please contact the camp office before your program begins if you anticipate needing a schedule adjustment.

    Is there an overnight option?

Yes — some Wild Paws locations offer an optional Wednesday night sleepover. It includes outdoor cooking, team-building games, and supervised tarp or cabin camping led by qualified leaders.

What should my child bring each day?

Campers must come prepared for changing outdoor conditions. Pack a backpack with weather-appropriate clothing, two full water bottles, lunch, snacks, sunscreen, swimsuit, and towel. A full, up-to-date list appears in the What to Bring section.

What if my child comes home with a partially eaten lunch?

That’s very common and nothing to worry about! Campers are told they may eat at almost any time during the day — not just at fixed snack or lunch breaks. It usually takes a day or two for children to adjust to this flexible eating schedule.

Staff offer reminders and opportunities, but we never force a camper to eat. If your child consistently brings home food, try sending smaller, energy-dense snacks like fruit, cheese, or granola bars.

Will staff require my child to wear sunscreen?

We take sun safety seriously and remind campers 1–2 times per day to apply sunscreen — but we never force anyone. Natural consequences are part of outdoor learning and personal responsibility.

Parents should apply a base layer before camp and send a labeled, easy-to-use sunscreen, along with the required sun shirt and hat listed on the packing list.

Will staff make my child drink water?

Hydration is emphasized, but reminders may or may not be given depending on the day’s activities and weather. Campers are taught to take responsibility for drinking water regularly throughout the day.

Please send two full water bottles each day. Staff ensure safe drinking water is available and encourage refilling as needed.

Do you do all the listed activities?

We include as many of the listed activities as possible, but there’s only so much time in a day. Scheduling depends on weather, location, staff expertise, and camper input. We prioritize fun, balance, and safety rather than completing every activity each week.

If your child is set on one particular activity, please note it may not run that week — campers should be excited about the majority of camp activities.

Do campers swim or canoe? Are lifejackets required?

Wild Paws Day Camp features swimming and water play each week when conditions allow. Canoeing may take place at our Sooke and Saanich (Beaver Lake) locations, depending on weather, wind, and water safety conditions. Canoeing is not offered at the Westshore (Thetis Lake) program.

Occasionally, swimming may be restricted or cancelled due to algae blooms, poor water quality, or unsafe weather conditions. In these cases, staff substitute alternate fun and educational outdoor activities to ensure campers still enjoy a full and active day.

For all swimming or open-water play, campers under age 9 or those below Red Cross Swim Level 5 must wear a lifejacket / PFD at all times. Leaders evaluate weather, water clarity, and ability levels daily to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

What if my camper is sick?

Please keep your child home if they are unwell (fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or contagious illness). If a camper becomes sick during the day, staff will contact you to arrange an early pick-up. Campers should be symptom-free for at least 24 hours before returning.

Because staffing and transportation are pre-planned, refunds or make-up days are not available for missed time due to illness.

What happens if there’s bad weather or environmental concerns?

Weather and environmental factors may affect the schedule. In cases of rain, heat advisories, or air quality alerts, staff adjust activities to maintain safety and comfort while keeping the fun going.

Are the staff trained in first aid and safety?

Yes — all WEA staff are trained in First Aid, CPR-C, and outdoor risk management. Our team also has extensive experience supporting children of all personalities and abilities, including those who may need extra patience or guidance in an active outdoor environment.

    Can friends be placed together?

We do our best to accommodate friend requests noted during registration. Please include your friend’s name on the registration form so we can plan accordingly.

We also encourage campers to attend on their own — many discover new friendships and confidence in the camp environment.

    What is your cancellation policy?

Our refund and cancellation policies are outlined in the current General Terms & Conditions (PDF). Please review this before registering, as policies may change from season to season.

Who do I contact for questions?

Email info@westernadventures.ca or call 250-888-1622. You can also use the contact form below to reach our team directly.
